What can a baby elephant at the National Zoo reveal about art? During a recent visit to see the elephant, presenter Sara Shoob was reminded of a work in the Renwick Gallery’s contemporary craft collection. That moment sparked an exploration of the unexpected connections that exist across the Smithsonian’s collections.

In this program, Shoob will examine works from the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) alongside objects and ideas from across the Smithsonian. Drawing on her knowledge of art and museum collections, she will consider connections to artifacts at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, a flag from the National Museum of American History, specimens from the National Museum of Natural History, phenomena from the National Air and Space Museum, regalia from the National Museum of the American Indian, and more.

Through these connections, Shoob will invite participants to look more closely at works of art and consider how objects from seemingly different fields can illuminate one another.

Sara Shoob is a graduate of Boston University and has an extensive background in teaching and educational administration with an emphasis on history, social studies, and the arts. Sara currently works as a docent at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Renwick Gallery. She has made many presentations for LLI Manassas and other local organizations; she loves sharing her passion for art.
