Percussive Dialogues: An All-Levels Dance Workshop with Live Music

Hylton Performing Arts Center, Merchant Hall

Featuring Mason Artist-in-Residence Soles of Duende

This high-energy, all-levels workshop explores the vibrant world of percussive dance, guided by the collaborative ensemble Soles of Duende and supported by live music. Participants receive a hands-on introduction to the foundational elements of Kathak, Flamenco, and Tap, experiencing how rhythm, gesture, footwork, and musicality shape each form.

The class is structured to welcome movers of all backgrounds. Soles of Duende artists Brinda, Arielle, and Amanda each lead introductory segments that break down the basics of their respective traditions, offering accessible tools, cultural context, and rhythm exercises that ground students in the essence of each style. Live accompaniment by AJ Jagannath (Guitar), Ryan Stanbury (Trumpet) and Okai Musik (Percussion) elevates the experience, helping dancers understand timing, call-and-response, and the dynamic relationship between movement and sound.

In the final section of the workshop, the collective comes together for Soles of Duende’s signature rhythm-building practice: a creative group process where participants layer patterns, build ensemble timing, and explore how multiple dance traditions can converse through shared pulse and improvisation. Participants are sure to leave energized, inspired, and connected to both the individuality and collective power of percussive dance.

This workshop is free, but registration is required.

This Mason Artist-in-Residence engagement is made possible through the generous support of Amazon Web Services, BION, the Hylton Center Education Initiative, and the Hylton Performing Arts Center Endowment.
