Based on the beloved film, Akeelah and the Bee tells the story of an independent thinking middle school student who has a passion for words.  The more complex and intricate the words, the more eager Akeelah is to use her keen intelligence for spelling them.  Can Akeelah’s think-big attitude, passion, and intelligence for words take her from a rough Chicago neighborhood to the finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.?  Playwright Cheryl West’s play inspires in a story that proves that dreams can come true.
