In March 2019, a local community of women Veterans participated in a smart phone photography workshop series taught by Ms. Danielle Dravenstadt, which led to an exhibition called Exploring Identity with Women Veterans. The exhibition features the work of seven women who served during the Vietnam War-era through post-9/11-era and in several branches of the military, and it demonstrates their perceptions and reflections, as well as the photographic techniques that they learned together. In May 2019, Dr. Niyati Dhokai and Ms. Shamala Capizzi traveled with the exhibition to Hampton, Virginia, where it was featured at the Virginia Women Veterans Summit.
The Veterans and the Arts Initiative serves as an arts and community hub for Veterans, Servicemembers, their families, and military caregivers. The Initiative is based at George Mason University’s Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, Virginia and serves community members from across Northern Virginia. The intended benefit of the Veterans and the Arts Initiative is to facilitate community engagement for a diverse community of intergenerational Veterans and Servicemembers, while establishing strong connections to the arts, encouraging active participation, and supporting social relationships.
