Works by Javier Padilla
This exhibit runs through June 2
Color serves as such a powerful component of art that it often has the ability to distract from other elements. When artist Javier Padilla began to consistently receive feedback that the bright colors of his works appealed to viewers, his response was to look inward and find new ways to connect to and examine his art: he dropped these colors from his palette, and sought to highlight form, line and content without the distraction of vibrant colors. Cinza means gray, but also ash—specifically cremated ashes, the remains after destruction. Padilla’s works for Cinza contain a kindred and stirring connection to depictions of the flag of Puerto Rico washed out into black and white, symbolizing economic crisis and a people in increasing peril amidst the hurricane season of 2017. Through works created in grayscale, Padilla captures the depth and nostalgia of black and white photography, often rendering scenes, or spaces or interactions that are both in and of Puerto Rican culture and yet wholly universal.
